The London Boat Race

Watch Oxford and Cambridge battle it out

The Oxford University Boat Club and Cambridge University Boat Club first raced each other in 1829, and the women’s first race took place in 1927. The Races require the student rowers from both universities to train as elite athletes while balancing intensive academic courses.

In 2017, Oxford won The 163rd Men’s Boat Race by one-and-three-quarter lengths, in a quick time of 16 minutes and 39 seconds, taking the overall event record to 82–80 in Cambridge's favour. Cambridge stopped Oxford winning for the fifth year running in The Women’s Boat Race, with an overall margin of 11 lengths, bringing their total to 42 against their Oxford rivals’ 30 total wins.
