Angel Comedy

Laugh until it hurts

There’s a safe haven for funny in London, and while it’s always busy, and always full, not many people know about it. Why? It’s not exactly a dazzling affair; just chairs and tables set up in the upstairs of a pub. Half the crowd don’t get seats, and if you leave your seat without someone to guard it no one can guarantee it’ll still be there when you get back (even if it’s for a really quick trip to the bathroom!).

I’m talking, of course, about Angel Comedy. In Angel (like it’d be anywhere else!). It’s a bit confusing to find, because, like I said, it doesn’t have its own designated venue. You have to go early if you’re hoping to get in, because the queue fills up to capacity a good hour before the comedy even starts. The event itself is upstairs the Camden Head, though, which means you can have a pint and perhaps something to eat while you wait. If pub-food isn’t to your taste, there’s a Breakfast Club just around the corner and a few other really delicious looking places.

People know what’s good, and they know what they like, and Angel comedy is both. It’s on every day of the week, with each day offering something new. You can even see big names show up every once in a while (I missed Russel Howard by a week!) Mondays are Improv shows, Tuesdays offer favourites from the Edinburgh festival, Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are raw acts – newcomers trying it out or experienced acts trying out new material! Fridays and Saturdays are their professional nights, guaranteed to have you laughing until your stomach hurts.

The best bit? The event is free! You can go and leave without paying for anything, though you shouldn’t. They only way Angel Comedy can continue it’s marvellous streak and keep London laughing is through donations of patrons. They suggest a fiver per person (which is still really cheap), however it is, more or less, how much you can afford. Donate what you’d like – they have no other income, and they do pay every act that comes on stage! So go on down and support this wonderful night out and keep it going for years to come!
