Art Deco on the Piccadilly Line
Art Deco
A closer look at some of the stations on the Piccadilly Line will reveal a unique 1930s style. Indeed, we never think about the art behind these ‘hum-drum’ old stations of London. Some of these underground stations were designed in the 20s and 30s by Charles Holden, a well-known English architect. He designed about 50 stations including Southgate. I love places like Southgate station, because of its shape but also because of its dynamism. Most of Charles Holden's stations remain in an "Art Deco" style. It's old but modern at the same time. I like to think that it is the modern bit of the past that has kept all its authentic charm. These are places where we don't think normally think about stopping when we are rushing around but there is a lot of reflection behind it. My favourite was Southgate, a tube station I can personally recommend for its wonderful ‘art deco’ style. I think to really appreciate this style you need to take time and observe all the intricate details, of several stations. There are great examples in Bounds Green, Turnpike Lane or Wood Green ‘tubes’. Visiting ‘non-tourist’ places like these can unearth plenty of London’s hidden gems.
