Duck Egg Café

Probably the best brunch in South East London

Duck Egg café is a gem hiding behind a simple, duck egg shell coloured façade. I walked past many times, thinking that it’s just another, unexceptional local café until I gave it a try and proved myself wrong.

To begin with, did you know that duck eggs stay fresh longer, are richer and have twice the nutrients than chicken eggs, providing more omega-3 fatty acids? You can still choose the alternative of hen eggs, which is about a pound cheaper, but not many cafes specialise in duck eggs giving you the opportunity to upgrade your healthy breakfast to extra healthy. The usual brunch and breakfast menu includes uncommon options such as Eggs Forestier (basically mushroom benedict served with hash brown and grilled tomato) and Mediterranean breakfast (egg, grilled Halloumi, olives, tomato, cucumber and Ciabatta bread). My usual choice is Vegetarian Breakfast so I simply had to try Duck Egg’s version of it! Rich in flavour duck egg, beans, two vegetarian sausages, a crispy hash brown and two slices of toast – I was full for the rest of my day…

My boyfriend and I visited Duck Egg café on a warm, sunny day and the outside front area was full. We were pleasantly surprised by great service – the waitress took a table and brought it outside so we could enjoy the sun! The inside space is very bright and tastefully decorated with vintage posters, pastel chairs and a funny mural of ducks and eggs. I am definitely coming back to try their coffee, other breakfast/brunch options and Duck Egg cakes (I read that pastries made with duck egg cakes are fluffier and rich in flavour).
