The Eatery, Hammersmith
It does exactly what it says on the tin
This is possibly the most non-descript restaurant ever mentioned on a travel website, but it deserves attention. Why? The food is delicious and well-priced, but then again, look hard enough and you’ll find copious amounts of cafés that offer the same. The Eatery I’m talking about is special because the bad day I was having instantly became a great one after eating there.
In short, the owners are the most kind, adorable people you could meet. They turned a master’s student stressed out about her upcoming dissertation deadline into a happy woman. I should probably clarify a bit more, because my situation was incredibly dire before I went to eat there the first time.
My dissertation was due in a week. I had an entire segment I had yet to start (procrastination, go figure) and was about to go to Kew Archives to get that work done. I was so stressed out and in the dumps about the whole thing I didn’t think I could talk to anyone. Perhaps I had temporary social anxiety, but the mere thought of going to a café where I had to order my meal instead of the Sainsbury’s across the street terrified me. I even asked my boyfriend to order for me when we decided that this was the place where we were going to eat.
But when I walked in, they wooed me with a single hello. I’ve never had my mood so instantly repaired as I did when I met the two of them. They were just so happy and cheerful, I found myself ordering despite my earlier anxieties. I ordered the Eatery Special (sandwich) and he ordered chips with beans and cheese. His order wasn’t on the menu per say, but they were more than happy to help. Each order is more than a lunch filling, and it was so incredibly tasty. I wholly recommend the Eatery Special sandwich – spicy sausage and grilled halloumi on a choice of your bread.
We now consider it our place, and have gone back again since – same effect. Our moods were instantly brightened. Go for the food or for whatever magical quality they seem to have for making you feel happy and welcome – you won’t regret it!
