Experiencing British Football
My first football match in London
It is not unknown that football is England’s favourite sport and with the amount of teams based here in London it is practically a must for any visitor to go and watch a match. I decided to go to a QPR game against their rivals Brentford. I didn’t know much about either team beforehand and mainly chose that game because, well, it’s cheaper than trying to Arsenal or Chelsea. The stadium is located right in the city just a short walk from the Woodland Station. I could tell the stereotype of English football fans was true just from the amount of fans wearing their team scarfs already chanting in line to get in the stadium. The people in the stands were energetic throughout the entire game even when things were not going well for QPR and the Brentford side cheered for the entire last half after their second goal. While the fans truly did not disappoint, I felt the real difference between the football match and the sporting event back in the states was that alcohol was not allowed in the stands. I’d suggest grabbing a pint before the game instead of trying to finish a beer standing in the crowd outside the stands in the short amount of time between the two halves. It was a fun environment the entire game and even after a loss the fans kept their spirits up with talk of a win next time. A great way for anyone to experience and take part of a big aspect in British Culture.
