The Hope and Anchor
Hope in Islington
The Hope and Anchor, Islington. I recently returned to this splendid old pub (opened 1880) to relive my punk rock youth but also partly to reassure myself that nothing really changes (excepting middle aged spread and receding hairline). If ever a book is written about the most important venues of the late 70s punk and New Wave bands, half of it would be dedicated to the Hope & Anchor, Islington. London's answer to New York's CBGBs. The cellar is still a live venue and looks almost exactly as it was when I saw Madness and Dire Straits way back in the 70s. Music is still alive and kicking today. The pub serves great food and real ales. I had a pie and a pint on a special deal! The bar atmosphere is relaxed and the staff cheerful. You can get there on the underground at Holloway Road, station 4 mins from Hope & Anchor, or overground Highbury and Islington Railway Station, again about 4 minutes walk away.
