Kew Gardens

Royal Greenery in The South West

Now, we all know London is mainly concrete, don’t we? The city is shaded with big buildings and imposing skyscrapers. However, being a lover of nature in this city is easy too. There’s plenty of great parks/farms and recreational sites to enjoy and one of the best has to be Kew Gardens. Situated in the leafy South West, Kew is the place to go to marvel at plants from all over the world be at one with nature. It is £15 for adults to enter (£14 if you book online) and that allows you to explore everything on the 120 acre site all day and represents a snip of a price in London.

Once in the gardens, there’s plenty of things that will catch the eye. The first thing you’re drawn to is the giant Palm House which is essentially a huge greenhouse for tropical trees and plants. Featuring a tropical climate to sustain the plants, the greenhouse is a welcome bit of warmth among the typically cold Great British Weather. The green walkways inside take you from Africa across to the plants of South America and down to the bottom of the ocean through a marine exhibition which you can find underneath as well as containing a tree top walkway which gives you a birds eye view of the plants below.

Kew also has a few art exhibitions and one of the most distinctive bits of architecture in London with its own Pagoda standing tall in one corner of the gardens (quick heads up, this is closed in winter). However, one of the stand out exhibitions is The Hive installation which replicates what is like to be a bee inside a hive. Illuminated by 100’s of LED lights and with a constant whirring sound, it’s a pretty surreal experience and a great photo opportunity. The gardens also contain the infamous Tree Top Walkway which allows you to enter the life of a bird and inspect animals live off the ground and above our heads. The walkway is an incredible experience, however it’s not for the faint hearted as it is surprisingly high!

Kew is well worth the travel out of the city, the Gardens themselves are absolutely stunning and the areas surrounding are extremely quaint. It’s a brilliant and educational day out for everyone and with a café serving cake and tea, could you get a more authentic British experience?
