A London Christmas

Yuletide in the Capital

For all that the United Kingdom doesn’t do for Halloween, it lavishes on Christmas. Particularly London. I’ve never seen such fanfare for the festive season as I have in my years living here, and I adore every second of it. Little secret about this author: she’s born on Christmas. I can be very particular about my Christmas celebrations, too, though I have my mother to blame for creating an antique, beautiful Christmas in our home year after year. London, miraculously, exceeds all those expectations.

It’s almost like the city was built for them. The Christmas light displays instantly make me think of sitting next to the fire, staring up at my Christmas Tree. The beautifully elaborate window displays add an extra touch of beauty. And Liberty. Wow. If that store wasn’t beautiful beforehand, it becomes what I’ve always dreamed Santa’s workshop would look like, way up in the North Pole. Everything glimmers and twinkles, and I don’t care how corporate you can argue it is, I love it how it is. The extravagant displays, the effort into creating this very specific feeling of love and hope and generosity – everything combines into making London absolutely magical.

So whether it’s Harrods that captures your imagination, or Liberty, or Southbank’s Christmas Market, or just the café around the corner that have decorated for the holidays, get out there. Explore the beauty of London draped in Christmas, and perhaps find that inner child in all of you. We all need wonder in our lives, and the magical escape from reality might just be the key in finding it.
