North-Eastern Cream

Molly Bakes Dalston - definitely worth the trip

When Freakshakes hit London, everyone was talking about them. I love ice cream. Obviously, I had to go. The first place to make them was Molly Bakes. It was in Dalston, Kingsland, which was an awfully far way away, but I just had to make that trip. So I did! Many times, in fact – it’s one of those places that I was so desperate to try that I went several times trying to get there. To be fair this was immediately after Time Out did a piece on them, so everyone suddenly knew about Molly Bakes and the delicious treats it held inside. I didn’t even get a Freakshake the first time I went! Which, by the way, is why I can wholly recommend their cupcakes too. Another plus for the cupcakes, there isn’t a waiting time for them. You just get served and can be eating them in a jiffy. The Freakshakes, on the other hand, take an artist’s hand and prep time to complete.

The bakery itself is very small – a bright little blimp on the street. You might see a queue of people outside, you might not, it depends on the time of day (and again, I went shortly after they were thrust into the spotlight – the buzz might’ve died down by now. The interior is homely and adorable, and the staff are very friendly. You get a choice of only a few flavours of Freakshakes, but they are all de-lic-ious. They come with so much ice cream and cookies or brownies on top that eating one by yourself is sure to fill you up.

Also, there’s crackling candy in them. Not much, but just a few bites. My friends and I experienced it at progressing stages, with the first person going ‘Oh!’ as it happened to him, and the rest of us excitedly eating the rest, anticipating a sudden crackle in our mouths. Strange as it is, it happened as a surprise for all of us, which is an extra treat of fun to go with an otherwise heavenly dessert.

Needless to say, I went back. A few times. It’s absolutely worth it.
