Cannizaro Park Cruising

Explore Wimbledon's hidden gem

One of South West London’s most picturesque spots lies in the heart of Wimbledon, just south of the common. It’s so well hidden that the average traveller might miss it. However, it’s worth a tube and a bus journey for anyone visiting London just to explore this secret paradise.

Cannizaro Park is Grade II listed and has ornamental landscape gardens and enchanting walkways that would rival that of any famous park in Central London. It was once a part of the Duke of Cannizaro’s Estate and was a private garden for 300 years. It became a public park in 1949 after it was adopted by Merton Borough Council.

Take the Northern Line down to Tooting Broadway and hop on the 493 bus to get to Wimbledon Village. From there it’s just a ten minute walk. Inside the park’s entrance you’ll find a sculptured water fountain and you’ll be greeted with cheery chirping. That comes from the nearby aviary which houses a variety of beautiful and colourful birds. When you manage to distract yourself from the singing flock, you’ll find yourself following winding paths that lead you deeper into the park.

Some are wide and open while some paths are tucked away, hidden behind the densely-covered trees and hedges. Some paths are even covered in flower petals, giving you that feeling that you’re in an enchanted forest. The paths lead to the various attractions of the park such as the Rose Garden and the statue of Diana and the fawn. There is also the Italian Garden for you to walk through and admire. It’s close to the large pond which is one of my favourite spots.

After you’ve gone full circle around the park, it’s a good idea to grab a bench and catch your breath while admiring the sweeping green lawns. It’s a great place to have a bit of peace and quiet. All you hear is the tweeting of birds and the occasional whoosh of the wind. Traffic noise is but a whisper in the distance…

This is just the place for a picnic, but if you’re feeling really hungry you can pop down to Wimbledon Village for lunch.
