PIN 7 Hammersmith Terrace

Emery Walker`s House

7 Hammersmith Terrace is one of the most compelling visits in the borough. This was the house of engraver, Emery Walker, who decorated it in the unique Arts an Crafts Style. It is definitely deserving of the title `time-capsule` as everything that was installed by the previous owner is intact and original. Visitors will be able to see everyday artefacts and items of interest which are kept in mint condition - each one of which tell their own individual story. Tours are limited to 8 people

History

Emery Walker’s House was built in the 1750s. He was an engraver and a printer who became an important figure in the English Arts and Crafts movement and was also a very close friend of the renowned textile designer William Morris.

Walker was very fond of traveling and had numerous eclectic tastes. He furnished his home entirely in the Arts and Crafts style - arguably as a result of his close friendship with William Morris and several other well known artists of the same movement. When Sir Emery Walker died in 1933, the ownership of the property passed to his only child, Dorothy, who in turn sought to preserve its interior intact.
