Beaconsfield Contemporary Art
Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall (BGV) provides a critical space for creative enquiry
The annual programme consists of a range of exhibitions, residencies, talks and events as well as interventions in public space.
Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall (BGV) offers a large and well-designed laboratory space, a stone’s throw from Westminster, for artists, curators and lay people from all backgrounds to experience art.
Since 1992 the directors have worked in the non-profit sector with many artists, on a wide variety of contemporary visual arts projects, through which a distinctive approach to producing and presenting new work has been developed. BGV acts as a unique testbed and primary research vehicle informing theories of curatorial practice and the practice of making art.
Their distinctiveness reveals itself through their artistic practice that takes into account both the gestalt and the individual elements involved in the development and consumption of art. They put equal energy into the consideration of both their artists and their audiences, often making the activities of production and presentation seamless.
History
Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall (BGV), was founded in 1994 by artists David Crawforth, Angus Neill and Naomi Siderfin with the aim of providing a streamlined resource for the development and presentation of contemporary art and a desire to “fill a niche between the institution, the commercial and the ‘alternative’”.
BGV acknowledges its responsibilities as a maker, promoter and facilitator of the arts, which are a potent channel of communication. BGV believes that the arts should be a guardian of free speech, diversity of expression and democracy and regards its work as contributing to this principle. BGV’s artistic policy promotes dialogue locally, nationally and internationally and aims to reflect the diversity of London, representing a variety of cultural positions.
BGV puts into practice its belief that sustainable energy and global parity are principles of utmost importance by working with recycled products where possible, running a café using Fairtrade products and recycling its waste. The venue has been running on alternative energy since 2000 – probably the first and only arts organisation in London to be powered by 100% green electricity.
