One of the magnificent seven
The sixth of London`s Magnificent Seven cemeteries, and a source of unlikely inspiration to Beatrix Potter Brompton Cemetery is one of Britain`s oldest cemeteries. Seeking names for the animal characters in her children’s stories, the author would often visit nearby Brompton Cemetery for inspiration. Located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea it has more than 35,000 headstones and monuments , many with a unique architectural merit, and is undoubtedly one of London’s hidden gems.
History
In the early 19th century, inner city burial grounds, had long been unable to cope with the number of burials. In 1837 a decision was made to lay out a new burial ground in Brompton, London.Originally known as the West London and Westminster Cemetery Company, the cemetery was established in 1840 as the sixth of London’s “Magnificent Seven” Victorian era park-cemeteries. Brompton Cemetery now covers 39 acres.
