PIN The Camel and Artichoke

Best beer garden near Waterloo

Lower Marsh is not exactly a secret, and neither is the Camel and Artichoke, but it is tucked away behind the taxi rank at Waterloo and has a transmogrified into different versions over the years. It’s a bit of a Tardis as you step into a pub which appears much bigger on the inside that the outside. There are large screens show the football but you can still have a quiet pint at lunchtime from their range of well-kept beers and there is a relaxing lounge area upstairs. But the real jewel in the crown is the very pleasant rear beer garden which will be packed to the brim on a balmy summers evening. A relatively simple food menu shows an absence of camel-related vittals but the curly fries are an ample replacement.

History

The Artichoke opened on the site in the 1770s, as before the train station was built the pub sat on Artichoke Place, the main road leading down to the Thames docks where artichokes were delivered. A far larger pub than it appears from its little frontage, the Camel & Artichoke has existed at this spot in some form or other for over 200 years. Its name is partly taken from an old route for artichokes through London some time ago.

Atmosphere

Early evening drinking is partaken by a healthy mixture of locals, tourists and escaping commuters and Waterloo Station is literally a 5 minute walk for those living or staying in the ‘burbs.
