History
Church Street takes is name from St Mary's Church a medieval church at the top of the street. Since Saxon times this route has been the principal roadway joining Richmond and Hampton. In 1716 the street was paved with the stones from the collapsed 15th century church (St Mary's).The traffic increased after the construction of the Richmond bridge in 1777 but was reduced after 1899 when York Street was opened as the principal route in 1899. This street has an important commercial and trading history - a place where local families have lived and worked for generations.
