PIN Curzon Cinema, Mayfair
A Unique Cinematic Experience
The Curzon Street Cinema, Mayfair has hosted foreign and art house films for an eternity and was one of the first cinemas in the UK to import a regular stream of international movies. It is known throughout the city as a very classy venue. The bigger of its two screens is a classic – a 307-seater that has kept its two original Royal Boxes: the smaller screen is a 65-seater theatre. The programme is as eclectic as a visitor might hope for with a mixture of arthouse, live events and documentaries all supported by a well-stocked bar full of goodies
History
‘The Curzon’ is a Grade II listed building in London’s West End and was built in 1963–66 by H. G. Hammond for Sir John Burnet, Tait and Partners, architects. It is probably the finest ‘post-war’ cinema and also the least altered. Originally built in 1934 and commissioned by the Marques de Casa Maury, the owners leased the building after World War II and started importing foreign language films. Today it boasts a rich cinematic history which has hosted many a star-studded premiere.
