Community Cinema in Deptford
Difficult to believe but the London Borough of Lewisham was one of only two London boroughs with no dedicated cinema. This ended with a community based project that built a new venue for film and arts on Deptford Broadway. Their thesis is that cinema should be for everybody and that is the ethos that comes through as soon as you enter the place, providing interesting cinema, that is also accessible.
The cost of a cinema ticket today can be upwards of £12 and even more when you factor in the travel for Lewisham residents to nearby Greenwich or Southwark, or central London; it is increasingly no longer an affordable night out. Approaching its third year of regular screenings, Deptford Cinema is now the oldest operating cinema in Lewisham.
Although the 40 seat cinema is open for business and fully functional, they are still in the process of completing our darkroom, gallery space and a fully licensed cafe/bar. The programming of events and films is open to anybody to show the films they want, and the cinema will be a hub for all things film in Lewisham.
How to get there
The best way to get there is to take the DLR and get off at Deptford bridge. Bus routes 53, 177, 453, N89, 47 and 225 stop close to the cinema. There is a free car park behind the cinema after 6:30pm.
Triptide Thoughts
Great to see the of community action and cinema. We had a brilliant night out.
