The Home of Charles Darwin

Down House is the former home of Charles Darwin and his family during the 19th century and the place where his 7 children were born. It became a museum in 1929 when Sir George Buckston-Browne bought it to make it a Darwin Memorial. Today you can visit this museum and visit the place where the Origin of the Species was penned. Down House was voted by the Department of Culture to be listed as a Grade 1 UNESCO world heritage site which in a previous life was a surgical research station. Visitors can book a guided tour with a professional who will talk to you about Darwin`s life and work.



History

The Darwin's moved into the house on 1842 which was originally built in 1650 and in 1907 the house became a girl's school. In 1927, the school become a museum and the Royal College of Surgeons President moved in becoming the museum curator.

How to get there

The best way to get there is to take the Hastings train from London Bridge and get off at Orpington then take the bus number R8 at Orpington bus station (E) and alight at Downe Court Farm.

Opening times

It's open daily from 10am to 6pm.
