The Highgate cemetery is a cemetery that is very popular with the living. There are 53,000 graves inside the cemetery. It designed in 2 parts: East cemetery and West cemetery and you can easily get lost. In East cemetery, you can find the headstone of Karl Marx and numerous other luminaries.
The West cemetery contains some exquisite architecture and beautiful chapels chapels - but you do need to book this part of your visit which is by guided tour only. It lasts around 70 minutes and you can take plenty of pictures during the tour (Monday to Friday mornings). Group tours of up to 45 people can be organised. There is plenty to excite the avid architect such as the Egyptian avenue, the circle of Lebanon, the Terrace catacombs, the mausoleum of Julius Beer, and the East cemetery although the George Michael’s Grave is not accessible to visitors.
History
In the early of the 19th century, the mortality rate was high and the city ran out of space for burials. It was then decided to open 7 super-sized burial plots. In 1839 that the cemetery opened.
How to get there
You have to take the bus number 210 and get off at Bisham Gardens and then walk 5 minutes to get there.
