PIN Mayflower Pub Rotherhithe
Historic Pub where The Mayflower set sail from
If you are visiting this historic but less well known area of the south bank and want to dine and drink in a place with history going back to the Pilgrim Fathers, this is the place to go. It has to be one of the top pubs in undiscovered London, being located on the jetty that was the mooring for the famous pilgrim ship.
Historic London has a great tradition of Thames-side pubs and there are many to sample along this stretch of riverbank. Few though have the authenticity and atmosphere of the Mayflower. The location will be of great interest to all visitors but especially those from the USA as it was from here that the Mayflower set sail for the new world in 1620. The pub was part owned by the Captain of the Mayflower, Christopher Jones so you can’t get much more of a historic pedigree than that! If you are a descendent of one of the original Pilgrim Fathers there’s descendant’s book for you to sign, but sadly this does not entitle you to free drinks.
It’s a welcoming cosy tavern any time of year but especially in winter with its roaring open fire and traditional wooden pews. At the rear a decked jetty area affords great views of the river and blankets are available for cold days. They offer good food in the upstairs restaurant and the menu is a blend of traditional pub fare with an international twist like Kobe beef-burgers. Portions, especially Sunday roasts are very generous, but space is limited so probably best to call for a reservation.
Overall a great place to start or finish a trip to Rotherhithe.
Historic setting to explore the Rotherhithe Thameside
Rotherhithe is at the heart of London's historic trading heritage. It's less well know than other areas and perhaps suffers from its location being close to the more publicised tourist hot-spots of Greenwich and Tower Bridge/Butlers Wharf. Take some time to research its history, walks and attractions of the area, from the Brunel Museum to his first tunnel under the Thames, Surrey docks shopping centre and inner-city farm and best of all, the 17th Century Mayflower Pub with its ongoing links to the Pilgrim Fathers historic voyage
Hearty Food for all tastes
The Mayflower offers a wide selection of of tradition pub fare, from sandwiches to sumptuous Sunday roasts. The pub has special themed menus for different days of the week like 'Pie Night Wednesday' and 'Fishy Friday'. Portions are generous and prices are very attractive. Diners can eat in the bar, on the outside deck or upstairs in the restaurant area, but booking is advised as being a 17th century Pub space can be limited.
