The Kensal green cemetery is one of the most fascinating `Magnificent Seven London cemetries. Opened in 1833, Kensal Green houses actually more than 65,000 graves, including the alleged memorial of Freddy Mercury, and the tombs of lots of notorious residents. Outside of its illustrious residents, what makes this place compelling is its gothic decoration.The tombs are surrounded by vegetation, and in some places, nature has completely invaded the stone. The cemetery is home to at least 33 species of bird and other wildlife, with all these elements it exudes here a strange and fascinating atmosphere.
History
During the first part of the 19th century, the population of London went from 1 million to 2.3 million and the small church cemeteries were quickly engorged, between 1832 and 1841 7 huge cemeteries were installed outside of the city centre to accommodate this mortuary overpopulation.
Kensal Green Cemetery opened in 1833 and was the first commercial cemetery in London.
