History

Madame Tussauds has been open to visitors to London for over 250 years and is becoming more and more popular as more wax work figures are created. The founder, born with the name Marie Grosholtz, was originally the art tutor for King Louis XVI’s sister until she returned to Paris and was put in prison with her mother and was only given release when she agreed to make death masks of nobles, the king and queen. From this, she inherited Dr Philippe Curtius’ wax exhibition which she takes to Britain and opens up the original Madame Tussauds which at the time was called “The Baker Street Bazaar” in London.
