PIN Marc`s Pub Signs

Traditional English pub `art`

Marc is a stall holder in the famous Piccadilly Market where he sells traditional English pub signs made in London. Each hand-made sign is made of hardwood and is extremely light in weight to carry or send by post. The market and his stall is a `must visit` when planning your trip to London.

All the signs represent pubs that have existed across the UK since the 12th Century. Unfortunately some of these pubs are no longer in existence, however the pub signs are and theses beautiful handmade replicas are available to buy. They make ideal souvenirs of pubs you have visited, or a great present for the art lover, pub lover, or someone with a good sense of humour.

Marc has over 700 designs in various sizes (From wooden Fridge magnets to full size signs), covering Kings and Queens of Britain, sporting themes, professions, animals, and sights. These pub signs have been sold in Piccadilly Market for over 20 years.

Bespoke signs are also available and can designed from any existing sign that takes your fancy. The name can be changed to make it more personal, or appropriate for the intended recipient. You can even get an image of yourself painted into the sign for that extra personal touch.

The Pub Sign's Place In History

The British Pub is at first sign characterised by by the wooden sign that has been displayed outside, often for centuries. The origin of the sign goes back to Roman Britain, when a branch from a bush would be hung over the door of an ' ale house'. By the Middle Ages a law was passed (1393) making it mandatory to hang a sign near the door if you brewed and sold ale (brewers were often the lady of the house). In a mostly illiterate populace the sign needed to be highly visual with a motif that would curry favour with England's rich and powerful e.g a Red Lion.

Ale originally meant a fermented drink brewed using malted grain (mostly barley) while beer (from the 1500s) used hops as flavouring and also became known as 'bitter' because of its taste.
