Architectural masterpiece
The Old Royal College is the architectural centrepiece of maritime Greenwich. The venue is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site who described as outstanding universal value and reckoned to be the finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles.
There are plenty of different events organised here such as the Greenwich Festival and Greenwich Music Time. Visitors should ensure that a visit to the chapel is on their plan. The grounds and gardens also offer a spectacular view
History
The Old Royal Naval College was built by one of England’s greatest architects, Christopher Wren. Originally it was the birthplace of Tudors Queens Mary I and Elizabeth I and the palace was a favourite venue of Henry VIII. It was damaged during the English Civil War and the palace was completely demolished in 1694. In 1997 the Navy has left the building and it was open to the public to visit.
How to get there
You can take the DLR Lewisham ang get off at Cutty Sark and walk 3 minutes to get there. Or take the bus number 135 and get off at Island Gardens Station.
