PIN Orleans House (and gardens)
Peace and tranquility in Twickenham
Orleans House is a beautiful art gallery located in Twickenham on the site of an old Palladian villa. It regularly shows exhibitions and cultural activities throughout the year and provides educational workshops for a wide variety of ages. It has a cafe if you want to eat or drink something when you can no longer absorb any more culture. The gallery can also be hired as a wedding venue and for functions.Outside the gardens of Orleans House are a peaceful place to relax and explore, with a nice little wild wood to picnic in.
History
Orleans House was a Palladian villa built by the architect John James in 1710, for the politician and diplomat James Johnston. It was subsequently named after the Duke D'Orleans who stayed there in the early 19th century. In 1926 Orleans House was mostly demolished. However, parts of the property, including a baroque octagonal room, were preserved. The octagon room and its service wing are grade I listed and the villa was converted into an art gallery in 1972.
