PIN Persephone Books

A Feminist Library

Persephone Books started in spring 1998 when Nicola Beauman had a concept of publishing books that were no longer published by the initial publisher. By coincidence, most of these books were written by women, and that’s how Beauman came out with the name of “Persephone” for her shop, since she’s the goddess of female creativity and also the representation of Spring (cf L. 1).

After three years of hard work, Persephone Books got its success with the publication of its 21st book entitled: ‘Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day’. It became a global bestseller, leading to a small shop to become a source of interest for passionate feminist readers.

Nowadays, Persephone Books has a shop in London where leading feminist novels can be found. Their peculiarity is the grey covers of their books, which has probably show readers that 'you can’t judge a book by simply looking at its front cover'.
