PIN Ruislip Lido
A beach in London?
Ruislip Lido is a bit of London `Sea-Side`. It`s an artificial beach in Ruislip, in the London Borough of Hillingdon and situated between Ruislip Common, Ruislip Woods and Poors Field. It is a great place all the family and comprises an artificial beach, a restaurant, and a forest. The place also has a child pleasing miniature railway with beautiful, tiny locomotives all pulled by a magnificent steam engine.
History
Originally opened as a feeder reservoir for the Grand Junction Canal in 1811, the reservoir was reopened in 1933 as a lido, with facilities for swimming and boating. A narrow gauge railway, the Ruislip Lido Railway was opened in 1945, and now runs about two thirds of the distance around the reservoir. The railway was opened in 1945 with short trains being hauled by Prince Edward, an Atlantic-type steam locomotive.
