One of London`s hidden gems it has an authentically unique architecture which can be best learned about by one of the tour groups that offer guides.
History
Southwark Cathedral was the fourth church built on the site. The previous building was devastated by a fire in 1212, another monastery was built in the Gothic style between 1220 and 1420.
In 1539, after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the monastery was reduced to the rank of parish church. It was only in 1905 that it was elevated to the rank of cathedral.
Several of William Shakespeare's theatrical companions are buried here.
