PIN St George The Martyr

Little Dorrit`s Church

St George The Martyr is a Parish church located in the historic heart of Southwark. Famous as Little Dorrit’s church, the Church of St George the Martyr is one of the oldest buildings in Borough High Street and has seen nearly three centuries of traffic pass its door on its way to the City of London. There were at least two previous churches on this site and there is a tradition that there was a church here in Saxon times though there is no mention of it in the Domesday Book.

The Church architecture is built of red bricks with Portland stones, a white-grey limestone from the Isle of Portland

History

The first church was built originally on the 12th century. During the centuries, it was rebuilt or repaired according to its usage and the damage it received from diverse attacks. The church and the famous English writer Charles Dickens have a common story because he was living close to the church and the house which he used to live in was part of the Clerk of St George's.

During the World War I, the Parish community of the church provided help and support to local service men and the community alike.

In the WWII, members of the Parish community joined up to fight against the enemy because it seemed to be the only way they could stop the incessant bombardments.
