PIN St Mary`s Church

Twickenham`s Hidden Gem

St Mary`s Church is a grade II listed church in Twickenham. With its medieval tower and red brick nave, this old church is a very beautiful piece of architecture in its own right. Close to Church street, the Thames, Eel pie island and beautiful parks - St Mary`s Church should be on everyones travel planner.

History

St Mary's Church dates from the 14th century. The medieval tower is the last remains of the 14th century church. Constructed of Kentish Rag (a poorly consolidated sandy limestone) the original nave collapsed on 9 April 1713, as the result of neglect and excavating the vaults. Originally the windows were filled with Victorian stained glass, but unfortunately the windows were destroyed by a nearby bomb during the Blitz.
