PIN The Ritzy Cinema

Made in Brixton

The Ritzy Cinema is one of the oldest cinema in the country.
Built in 1911, it is now an emblematic place situated in the heart of Brixton. Not only is it a cinema, but it is also a café where you can grab a drink before going to see a film. The building is known for its structure that is composed of various rooms, one of them being the famous big auditorium with an organ.

History

The ‘Electric Pavilion’ (now the Ritzy) opened in 1911 and was one of the country’s first purpose-built cinemas seating 750 people, complete with an in-house organ by the side of the screen to add music to the silent films. After the arrival of the ‘talkies,’ the cinema served Brixton’s community before being taken over by a George Coles in 1954, who renovated the cinema and gave the theatre its plush Edwardian interiors. He renamed it ‘The Pullman’. It was later renamed ‘the Classic’, before losing its sparkle and turning into a questionable pornographic cinema in its final years which finally closed in 1976. The cinema rose from the ashes two years later, reopening as an independent art-house cinema under the name of ‘The Little Bit Ritzy.’ By the mid 1990s, the cinema became known as The Ritzy, with a substantial modernisation programme and introduced four new screens, a bar and a café.

TripTide Thoughts

his is how cinema should be! The main cinema is stunning (I'm not sure which number it is). There's a really nice cafe too. The price reflects the quality of the surroundings.
