PIN The Viaduct Tavern
Immerse yourself in gin and history
Built in 1869 the Viaduct Tavern is one of the City of London`s best preserved Victorian `gin palaces.` It is home to the delicious London craft beer Camden Town Brewery, with a large diversity of spirits (especially gin). They serve food from 12 to 8 pm with a buffet, toasties, quiches and sausage rolls - all home made. The interior is old and classic and a great place to imbibe some great beer. It`s open Monday to Sunday but you will need to book in the week-end if you want a table
History
The Viaduct Tavern first opened as a gin palace. In those days gin was popular amongst poor Londoners because it was cheaper than beer. The tavern drew customers from each part of the social strata which included the working class, lawyers, government officials, and even criminals, due to nearby prisons.
Public executions were held at the nearby Viaduct, and the Magpie & Stump which had viewing rooms
Apparently there is a ghost that steals people's drinks when they are not looking but there are plenty of other ghost stories here and it is worth a visit just to get a feel for what it is like.
