PIN The White Cross Pub

.... but don`t get your feet wet

Richmond`s iconic riverside pub is famous for their great ales, home cooked food & rugby. Whether it is lunch on the Thames (or sometimes in it) or sun-downers in our garden, no visit to Richmond is complete without a visit to “The Cross”. They are open every day from 10am and serving food all day long from brunch to dinner, and they love animals of the four-legged kind (although draw the line at crocodiles).

This pub is bang, smack on the River Thames - to the point where the White Cross is often cut off by high tides in spring. Visitors can drink on the terrace or at the bar with a variety of long-time locals and just-arrived tourists. It also very popular with the rugby crowd at nearby Twickenham and is likely to be rowdy on match days.

History

The pub has served Young’s ales since 1869 and dates back to 1780 when it was originally called the Waterman’s Arms. It was rebuilt in 1838, and changed its name to The White Cross in 1840. The landlord at the time was Samuel Cross which may explain the name change. The pub is built on the site of the observant Franciscan Friary which was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1534, but there may be some remains of the friary incorporated within our extensive cellars. Also unique to the White Cross is their cosy fireplace which is situated underneath a window and one of only a tiny number of which are still used in this country.

TripTide Thoughts

Nice, traditional pub but don’t get caught on the Spring tide.
