PIN Wapping Old Stairs

The descending stairs of history

Wapping old stairs are located along the Thames in very small and narrow passes. In the 19th century, they were used by pirates, visitors or merchants to land on the shore of Wapping High Street. If you want to walk down the stairs to the water’s edge and see where history took place it is all there in front of you.

History

The stairs show the entrance of the Wapping basin, one of the three basins witch connected London Royal Docks to the Thames. The bottom of the stairs was the theatre of some executions : the "hanging judge" George Jeffreys and the famous Captain Kidd and the legend of his lost treasure.

Triptide thoughts

We heard the sound of the Thames dashing over the stairs and nothing else and were absorbed by the backward and forward motion of the water. It's a compelling piece of Old London not to be missed.
