5 reasons why you should visit Brixton
a place of culture and art
1- It's David Bowie's hometown
The rock’s greatest self-reinventor was actually born and raised in the heart of Brixton (40 Stansfield Road).
This legend also has a giant paint at his effigy right across Brixton’s tube station (On the right of Morley’s).
2- Its famous market
Brixton’s market is a community market where people are the sellers and the buyers.
The market sells a wide range of foods and goods but is best known for its African and Caribbean produce, which reflect the diverse community of Brixton and surrounding areas of Lambeth.
3- Its culture
Like I said, diversity is a strong representation of Brixton. Weither it’s a sunny or a rainy day, there’ll always be some foreign music playing (usually raggae).
When you have your headphones on, you automatically take them off as you exit the station, just for the pleasure of enjoying some peaceful music.
4- Its festivals
The Lambeth Country Show is hugely popular and attended by hundreds of people in July every year. This free, family-friendly event features live music, food stalls and bars.
If you’re a contemporary art fan, it’s definitely worth checking out Urban Art (6-7 Jul), a free, open-air art fair.
5- Its cinema
The Ritzy Picture House is one of the UK's largest independent cinemas. Built in 1911, the picture palace still retains its unique proscenium arch. As well as showing a mix of independent films, blockbusters and classic movies, the cinema hosts film festivals, spoken word events and Q&As with filmmakers and actors from around the globe.
