Covent Garden Art

Not All Pizza on the Piazza

Covent Garden sure does like getting dressed up. Whether it’s for the holidays, or for an art festival, it is almost guaranteed that Covent Garden will be the canvas for something magical a few times of the year. There has been a floating installation of white, glowing balloons, there has been mirrors installed all throughout. Each year it gets decked out for Christmas - to name but one festive season.

In short: Covent Garden is one of London’s main stages for art. With it’s beautiful market buildings and open piazza, I’d be surprised if it was left barren throughout the year. It makes trips to Covent Garden worth it, not only for the market or for the great selection of stores and restaurants (we heartily recommend the crêperie downstairs) you can go to immerse yourself in public art. Each piece is guaranteed to work harmoniously with the space it occupies. I’ve gone and seen a collection of giant sheep, each with a face goofier than the last. These little surprises make the space feel special. Covent Garden is more than just a shopping destination. A favourite memory of mine was wandering through London with a friend, drinking wine as we went, and stumbling upon Covent Garden and those infamous sheep. The piazza was deserted, which made it seem even more incongruous to see this giant cartoon sheep guarding the market.

It’s photos of you being silly, or photos of the art, or photos of you next to the art (being silly or otherwise) that combine to make a fabulous memory. After all, human memory is imperfect, but photos do wonders to jog it. So go on, see what’s installed now at Covent Garden, and save a little memory for yourself.
