The Compelling Docklands
Walking through the river's history
Docklands is a huge area which covers 4 boroughs of London including Southwark, Tower hamlets, Newham and Greenwich. The area of Wapping, an integral part of the Docklands composes Lime House, Surrey Quays, Rotherhithe, the Isle of Dogs and the Royal Docks and each neighbourhood is touched by London's famous old river.
Walking is by far the best way to discover the Docklands where you can almost smell the spirit of Old Father Thames stopping off on your journey at any of the unique 17th and 18th century pubs - each with their own unique ambience inside. While outside the difference between each area is in stark contrast as you move swiftly from one area to the next - experiencing both the old and the new every few hundred yards.
On my Docklands walk I particularly enjoyed the transition between ancient and modern history - finely articulated by the Docklands Development Corporation's beautifully recreated commercial and residential areas. A case in point is typified by Canary Wharf which has now established itself as London's second major financial centre behind the City of London.
Any history buff will enjoy a stroll through this area which has a foot firmly planted in the past but always looks to the future. In fact this walk should be highly recommended to any visitor to London who should definitely have it on their London trip planner.
