The George Inn

Last Remaining Galleried Inn in England

After my third or fourth time ferrying different groups of London visitors to Borough Market I decided that given the immediate historical significance of the surrounding areas there had to be a hidden gem close by. That’s how I found The George Inn, a stones throw from the market and definitely a uniquely spot - it’s the last surviving galleried inn in London!

On my next trip south of the Thames I opted for a pub lunch and was not disappointed. Stepping into The George Inn was like stepping back into time. I stood in the courtyard for a few moments to take in my new the surroundings and couldn’t help but think that this little piece of history probably didn’t look too different some 200 years ago. I took a short walk through the inn, clambering up the slanted stairways between levels of the inn, wandering through the narrow corridors and truly feeling like I’d run into the likes of Dickens who, on occasion, used to frequent the establishment!

When it came time to eat I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Between the hours of 12pm and 5pm The George has a bargain where if you order a burger you get a free drink of your choice! I started the meal in the courtyard, basking in the sunshine and slowly moved indoors as the evening started to cool.

By the time I left I’d truly felt as though I’d uncovered a hidden gem in the heart of Borough. A fantastic alternative to Borough Market and a must-see when you’re visiting London!
