Hummingbird Bakery
Sweetness & light in Portobello
Portobello Road holds so many good memories. Hummingbird Bakery is one of them. In fact, it was the highlight of my very first trip to the market. A friend of mine knew where the best cupcakes in London were, and compared to that Portobello Road Market seemed like second-place in terms of importance. The bakery itself is adorable, and pretty, and the cupcakes are even prettier. Even more adorable.
My personal favourite, I must say, are the black bottom cupcakes. The bakery left such an impression on me that later, on the last dredges of my battery, I dragged another friend of mine along a winding twist of turns so that we could go to it again (albeit, another location, hence the twists and turns). I’ve bought these cupcakes for special occasions, just because, as a surprise gift, what have you. They are so good I’ve done something I’ve never done before – I bought a recipe book. Specifically, I bought their cupcake book, and I still have it to this day. In a world where countless recipes (reviewed and tested recipes) are found on the Internet, I never thought I’d buy a cookbook. Ever. And yet, their cupcakes are special. I haven’t had anything like them since, which is why you’ll see me going back for them!
Each flavour is unique and scrumptious, which leads to the one problem I have with their bakery – there are just too many yummy things to choose from. The best thing I can suggest is to buy one of their selection boxes, and share with friends, because if you try to eat them all at once you’ll probably explode from all the sugar!
