BBQ chic: Koba, Fitzrovia

Traditional Korean food in the most modern of settings!

Turn the corner away from the busy office stretches of Fitzrovia and you’ll find hidden gem Koba in a quiet backstreet. Its unassuming interior appears modern and pragmatic, and on my visit it was suspiciously quiet. The decor is very clean cut, yet wooden. Traditional ceramic is elegantly presented against the back wall.

It was Sunday brunch time when I first went to Koba, and there was no one seated at the bar. However, I was immediately warned that the entire back area was reserved.

Despite initial scepticism, the place became a riot in about 10 minutes – every seat filled. Who would have thought that spicy Korean food would be a popular brunch choice?

I've been back since, and sat at one of the precious proper tables up the back. Whilst the bar is a nice experience for a brunch-goer who is looking for something new, the back area (with embedded BBQ cooking surfaces) is where the experience takes on a new high.

With a mix of delicious beef being cooked right in front of us, spicy crab stew, and a host of spicy yet delicious sides, I ate my way into a food coma happily. Everything at Koba tastes authentic, and yet nothing about the presentation feels traditional or stuffy.

No matter what time of day, Koba is buzzing. And it is a tribute to its dishes, that are always delicious and straightforward. They work to highlight clean, crisp flavours with traditionally Korean ingredients. If I can squeeze in somewhere, I will definitely return to this unassuming hit in Fitzrovia!
