My Old Dutch
Going Dutch in Holborn (and Kensington and Chelsea)
Having a Dutch housemate for three years really makes you appreciate their cuisine – poffertjes? Yes please. And yet, it wasn’t my Dutch housemate who introduced me to this restaurant, but my fellow international students on my course. We went for lunch one day, and I was sold.
First of all, because on Mondays they have a 50% off deal. Second, because the food is so good. I’ve gone back several times (I’m a sucker for repeated visits). The restaurant itself is cute, particularly if you get your seat upstairs, and the food is very, very tasty. I have yet to wait for a long period of time, and the only time I had to wait at all for a seat was the first time, when we were a party of about 10 or so people.
Their pancakes are “Dutch”. If you aren’t sure what this means, think of a crêpe, only the size of your arms if you were to put them in a circle. They are served on massive plates to accommodate their size, and the toppings cover the entire thing. You can get savoury pancakes or sweet ones, but regardless I can guarantee you that they will stuff you to the brim.
My favourite pancake is the salmon savoury one, with a creamy mushroom sauce that was so good even my picky date (who usually hates salmon in all its variations) agreed it tasted heavenly. If you’re up for only a small meal, share. It’s so big you’ll be content with only half, or, if you’re adventurous (or merely want lunch and dessert) order different ones and split them so everyone can get a different taste.
Mondays are the day to go, though their regular price is fair for a central London establishment (£10 normally, £5 on Mondays – and £2.50 if you share!)
This is the place for those who love crêperies but find they serve too little for their price. This is the place to eat till you’re stuffed on pancakes topped with ice cream and chocolate syrup and icing sugar or pancake-esque pizzas or dozens of different options. Each one tastes different from the next, and each one is mouth wateringly delicious. Go for a date! Go for a group meal! Go by yourself! It doesn’t matter, all that matters is the yummy food!
