David vs Goliath
The Plight of the small Hotelier
London is a hub for big business and the hotel industry is no different. Lenny Henry dominates television adverts to entice us into Travel Lodges and sites like Expedia make it easy for us to stay in large clinical hotels for small prices. But what does all this mean for the small hotelier?
“It’s so easy to get lost in a big hotel,” said Sylvia Hambi, Director of the Windermere hotel in Victoria with only 19 rooms available. “I remember when I stayed at a large hotel in France, I said hello to the girl at the desk and I think I scared her. I don’t want that for this hotel.”
The Windermere hotel have a range of travellers who thoroughly enjoy the intimacy of a small place and it’s not just visitors, they have been presented with several awards from different governing bodies including Agoda and the AA.
“It’s always challenging in this kind of environment,” continues Sylvia. “We are competing against hotels like the Hilton. But we wanted to open a place that we would like to stay in if we were travelling and I think that’s something we’ve achieved.”
