Top Tips For A Night At The Theatre
Just enjoy the experience
A summers night in Theatreland is obviously a treat but getting there can be a little crowded as you fight through the busy streets. Last night I was lucky enough to go to the Haymarket or to give it it's the correct name the Royal Theatre Haymarket to see the iconic "Only Fools & Horses". So here are my top tips for getting maximum enjoyment:
1) Firstly, walk to the theatre if you can. The 'tube' will be packed and smelly, particularly if it is summertime. Anyway, you can see so much more if you walk.
2) Just look up if you want to capture a little bit of architectural splendour. As London is constantly upgraded the buildings at eye-level change shape - just look up to the roofs where not much change takes place at all. It's all happening in the rafters.
3) See if you can pick up your tickets early from the box office. The waiting time for tickets is normally quoted as being around 30 minutes between pick up and curtain up so get then early if you can - it will give you more pre-show drinking time.
4) I hate crowded pubs at any time - let alone before I go to a show. To avoid this, go to the Admiralty Pub (opposite Leicester Square, lower end) and find the entrance to the downstairs bar. It is peaceful and uncrowded - a hidden gem if there ever was one.
5) When you get to the Theatre pre-order your drinks for halftime - this will avoid queueing.
6) When it is time to go home avoid the temptation to use the tube. It will still be packed with revellers trying to get home. Just walk!
7) Just enjoy yourself- its a wonderful experience if you know what you are doing.
