PIN Bedford Square
Bloomsbury`s Shining Jewel
Bedford Square, Bloomsbury, is one of the best-preserved squares in London, designed as a whole and surrounded by its original Georgian terrace houses, it was originally laid out between 1775 and 1780. At its heart lies its private garden, a spacious 1.8 acre (0.7ha), leafy haven in the midst of town.
Famous residents living within the period buildings overlooking the square have included: Thomas Leverton, the architect of the square; the second Duke of Devonshire; the architect William Butterfield; Prime Minister H H Asquith and Lord Eldon, the Lord Chancellor (whose daughter eloped with the son of Humphry Repton, designer of the neighbouring Bloomsbury and Russell Squares).
