Blackfriars Railway Bridge crosses the River Thames; this is the second bridge that has been named the Blackfriars bridge. The original bridge opened in 1864, designed by Joseph Cubitt. Due to the formation of the Southern railway, the use of the original Blackfriars bridge became useless, and the structure could not support modern trains. Therefore it was demolished in 1985, where the original columns all that remains.
