Located on the edge of Soho in the centre of London, the aim of this gallery is to honor famous British people who played a part in History.



National portrait gallery is an art gallery housing the largest collection of portraiture in the world and was the world`s first portrait gallery when it opened in 1856.







This museum consists of 42 rooms and 210,000 works of art. Through all these rooms, you will have the chance to discover faces that made history in some really important events, such as abolition of slavery, the first world war, women`s vote and much more.



This museum retrace history from time periods such as the Tudors and Elizabethans, the Victorian era, the 20th century and Contemporary era. Thereby, in this place, you will be able to discover the portrait of Elizabeth I and then contemplate portraits of nowadays` famous people such as J.K Rowling of Ed Sheeran.







Lastly, in addition to its permanent collections, the gallery has a varied range of exhibitions, complimentary events and, after hours of immersive British history, a rooftop restaurant with breathtaking London views.











History

When the idea for a National Portrait Gallery first won support in the 1850s, it was part of a British commitment to expand state support for the arts and reminding history through generations. Also, before taking its place on St Martin’s Place thanks to a government donation, the museum has been relocated 40 times across Westminster, Exhibition Road and Bethnal Green.

How to get there

The museum is situated near Charing Cross and Leicester Square tube stations and Trafalgar Square / Charing Cross Stn, St Martin's Place and Leicester Square bus stations. You can also park your car in nearby streets.
