Jawdance at Rich Mix
Free poetry and music in Shoreditch
Once a month, Rich Mix is taken over by a night of poetry and music in the form of Jawdance. Anyone is free to put their name into the hat and try their luck performing in front of this friendly and eager crowd. And it produces some amazing results – poems on all kinds of subjects, music and silliness of all varieties, and plenty of thought-provoking performances all round.
At my first attendance of the event, it featured subjects as diverse as plastic chairs, racism, the universe and time travel. You never know just what you’ll get at Jawdance. Talented poetry performers are invited to attend this evening, and are dispersed amongst amateur performers of every variety. Rich Mix support an event that is truly about showcasing local talent, and the fact that it is free is simply an added bonus.
Whilst I was not daring enough to perform anything myself, those that do are greeted warmly by host and audience alike. It’s a happy, friendly affair all round, as participants are welcomed and applauded by a lively audience of cheerleaders. Perhaps someday I too will try my hand on stage…
They have an in-house bar and Indian restaurant, which serves up great food at a good price, perfect for before the show. I had an incredible meal before enjoying a fun, laughter-filled evening.
For an evening of dynamic entertainment a little outside the norm, Jawdance is a strong contender. Occurring monthly, it’s worth investigating their last Jawdance of the year on November 23rd. Stay tuned for more of these events in 2017.
