Natural History Museum Lates

Night at the museum

I first heard about the concept of a “Lates” night inside the museum itself. I had seen it before, on passing, of course, but I had never actually noticed that it was a free event until I had to wait outside the bathroom. I had dismissed it before because there is a confusingly similar late-night event called “Sleeping with the Dinos” that costs a pretty penny. To be fair, you do get fed and you do get to sleep over, if I remember correctly.

Lates however are something you can enjoy at several museums (or at least the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum) for free. There are two reasons why this is so special: for one, it makes you feel like you’re spending a night at the museum (queue movie credits) and the second is that they serve alcohol. It’s free to go and get in, though the drinks you need to pay for. Mostly however it’s a chance to wander around the museum after hours and after dark.

If you think too much about it you realise that it’s really not too different than going during winter. The museum stays the same, the windows are dark, and unfortunately the museum does not come to life. If you just let yourself enjoy it, it feels like you’re a part of some secretive club that go around with a glass of wine in their hands as they look at dinosaur bones and cases of stuffed animals.

It becomes a low-key night out, where you can drink with your friends, have fun, and enjoy the Natural History Museum in a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. You don’t feel the need to read every little thing, and you aren’t being pushed by crowds trying to get through the museum as quickly as possible. Everyone is scattered around, lounging, not in a rush, not pushing, not making getting through difficult. It’s a nice and unique way to spend an evening.
