Sit back and relax at Ziferblat
Everyone's living room in London's East End
Tucked up into the corner of Old Street, at the very intersection of busy traffic and the polluted London buzz, is an oasis for creatives and wanderers. Ziferblat prides itself on being a living room for everyone and anyone, and it certainly feels like that. It is a unique little spot in the east end, one that you might not necessarily realise is there when walking down at street level.
It is its own kind of family; a bohemian place where there is no menu or agenda - just make your way up the stairs to hang out, play the piano or guitar, talk to strangers, make a cup of tea… It is designed to be a little home away from home. It tends to attract all kinds of local artists, and there is an ever-changing display of artwork to be found on the walls. Events are scheduled here regularly, from writing groups to self-help groups, artists and thinkers local to London are gathered here to share ideas and collaborate. It’s a unique place dedicated to an easy, relaxed vibe for all its visitors.
Let’s be clear here: it’s not a cafe, or a gallery. The person at the front is referred to as a “host”; they are welcoming, and will always offer to introduce you around the space to help you get acquainted. Much like a tour of the house when you visit a new friend, it’s all about inviting you in and making you feel at home. Instead of ordering a meal, you pay according to how much time you decide to stay at Ziferblat. It costs only £3 per hour that you are there, meaning that nobody will pressure you to move along and make space for the next person. You can sit back and take your time to work, talk, play – whatever you want to do.
I can be found tucked into a corner of Ziferblat on at least a weekly basis. It’s my spot to get some thinking or writing done, a respite from the craziness of Old Street.
